The [Re]Master02 Selfwinding by Audemars Piguet is an unexpected pleasant surprise
Introduction
After some major releases in 2024, the Le Brassus' manufacture goes back in time to relaunch the [Re]Master series. This new limited edition is a tribute to their 1960s historical models and. It also reflects their exploration of unique case shapes using modern materials.
With only 250 pieces being made available, this watch is poised to be a museum piece. I am a big fan of this particular release because it links the brand's past with their current commitment to execute advanced contemporary watchmaking. And they do it without any ostentatious designs.
Aesthetics
The [Re]Master02 Selfwinding captivated me at first sight with its distinct Brutalist design. It is a homage to the original Model 5159BA from the 60s. The watch features a Sand Gold case, an 18K gold alloy combining gold, copper, and palladium, resulting in a sophisticated hue that shifts between white and pink gold.
The case, with its flat surfaces and sharp angles, is finished with a brushed satin effect, enhancing its raw, industrial aesthetic. The dark blue dial, known as Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50, is composed of twelve triangular appliqués, creating a striking visual effect. The sapphire crystal aligns perfectly with the difficult case’s edges to achieve quite a unique architecture.
Movement
The ultra-thin (9.7mm) Caliber 7129 powers this new references. Based on the Caliber 7121, it provides a 52-hour power reserve thanks to its new construction and larger mainspring barrel.
Based on technical details shared by the brand, the movement includes inertia blocks in the balance wheel to reduce aerodynamic friction and features an oscillating weight mounted on ball bearings with two reversers for bidirectional winding (Pretty useful!). Then you also find the fine decorations that you expect in any AP model such as Côtes de Genève and polished angles.
Availability & Price
