2025 Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 steel re-edition
Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin is one of the oldest watchmakers. The brand has consistently redefined luxury by introducing designs like the Historiques 222, launched in 1977 as part of a new era of luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets.
The 222 has remained a benchmark, inspiring subsequent collections like the Overseas.
Aesthetics
The 2025 Historiques 222 re-edition in stainless steel stays true to the original design by Jorg Hysek, reflecting its 1977 predecessor (pic above). The 37mm barrel-shaped case retains its notched bezel, now crafted in stainless steel, with a meticulous brushed and polished finished.
A hallmark that I particularly like is the Maltese Cross at 5 o'clock in 18k yellow gold contrasts beautifully against the subtle, brighter blue dial, accented with gold hour markers and hands coated with luminous material.
The integrated bracelet has been slightly modernised for superior ergonomics, offering a more flexible, comfortable fit with hidden pins and a concealed butterfly clasp.
Movement
At the watch's heart lies the in-house caliber 2455/2, which replaces the vintage JLC-based movement. This modern mechanical movement maintains its slim profile, integrating a quick-set date, and features a solid gold central rotor engraved with “222.”
Availability & Pricing
The Historiques 222 in steel joins the permanent collection and is priced at €35,000. While less costly than the EUR 80,500 gold version, it is slightly higher than competitors like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in price. In my view, I find it quite absurd to see mechanical watches in steel priced above the €30k figure but I guess this is the new norm.
