The Cosmos on Your Wrist: The Urwerk UR-100V LightSpeed

Urwerk, a brand synonymous with innovation and exceptional craftsmanship in the world of horology, has unveiled its latest creation, the UR-100V LightSpeed. This model is a testament to the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking by integrating astronomical elements into its design. The UR-100V LightSpeed is not merely a timepiece but a cosmic explorer on the wrist, indicating the time it takes for the Sun’s rays to reach the eight planets of our solar system. This concept aligns with the founders, Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner's vision of introducing a new dimension to the perception of time, blending traditional horology with the vast expanse of space.

Aesthetics

The UR-100V LightSpeed showcases an unparalleled design inspired by the cosmos, with a particular focus on the speed of light as a measure. The watch features a new openworked domed black structure that displays the time taken for sunlight to reach the eight planets, offering a unique visual representation of our solar system.

The names of the planets and their corresponding sunlight travel time are inscribed on the periphery of the dial, making it a wearable planetarium. This innovative display is further enhanced by green indications for time and white for the planets, with a special blue and green hand indicating the planets as it moves across the dial. The case, made of 54-layer ThinPly black carbon, and the DLC-treated titanium caseback with a star-shaped rotor, underline the space theme while ensuring durability and a sophisticated matte appearance.

Movement

The heart of the UR-100V LightSpeed is its automatic calibre 12.02, developed in collaboration with Vaucher. This movement is notable for its intricate design and the inclusion of a full star-shaped rotor on the reverse side, optimized with a Windfänger airscrew to minimize shocks and reduce wear. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph) and boasts a power reserve of 48 hours. Its construction utilizes ARCAP, a non-magnetic alloy, for the carousel and triple baseplates, ensuring longevity and precision. The satellite hours system, a signature of Urwerk, is meticulously crafted from beryllium-bronze Geneva crosses and an aluminium carousel, showcasing the brand's commitment to both aesthetic appeal and mechanical innovation.

Availability & Pricing

The Urwerk UR-100V LightSpeed is a marvel of modern watchmaking, merging the aesthetics of space with advanced horological techniques. Priced at  €61,750 (excl. taxes), this watch represents a significant investment in a piece of horological artistry that transcends traditional timekeeping.
