Seiko's Special Edition Prospex inspired by American cold-water diving locations
In 1965, Seiko unveiled Japan's inaugural diver's watch, the 62MAS. Since then, Seiko's diver’s watches have garnered global acclaim from divers due to their advanced durability, water resistance, and accuracy.
Now, Seiko presents three modern takes on this classic mid-century design, each featuring a dial influenced by America´s most challenging cold-water diving locations.
The 3 new watches are, from left to right, SPB421, SPB419 and SPB423
Aesthetics
The SPB419 reference displays an icy-blue gradient dial reminiscent of Michigan's unique blue ice which is a rare phenomenon where slowly forming ice results in large crystals, giving it a deep blue hue.
Both the SPB421 and SPB423 take inspiration from the daunting glacial water tunnels of Alaska. The SPB421 offers a muted dark blue shade, echoing the deep ocean hues, while the SPB423 mimics the light gray shades of glacial ice.
All three offer a familiar comfort for diving enthusiasts: measurements of 40.5mm x 13.2mm with a 47.6mm lug-to-lug, a stainless steel case with a sturdy finish, curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective inner coating, and a more than sufficient (at least for humans) 200m water resistance. The watches also feature a three-link stainless steel bracelet with a tri-fold push button release clasp, secure lock.
All three variants have beautiful refreshing dials. However, the standout piece for us is the SPB419 with the icy blue dial that maybe makes it a bit more special.
Our favourite is the icy-blue dial inspired on Lake Michigan´s ice
Movement
The 3 references are powered by the same Caliber 6R35, self-winding 24-jewel mechanical movement, used in the SPB143, offering a commendable 70-hour power reserve. These aren't simply higher-end alternatives or limited editions but additions to the existing Prospex lineup, hence they keep the same movement as some predecessors. Likewise, all three were engineered for compliance with the relevant ISO for diving.
Availability & price
Sadly, these are tailored for the U.S. audience exclusively. These watches can now be purchased at select Seiko retailers for $1,250.
