Ressence: A visionary brand reimagining time
For those that may not know Ressence, it was founded by industrial designer Benoît Mintiens. It is a Belgian watch brand that challenges traditional watchmaking with an avant-garde approach. Known for its rotating dials and crown-less operation, Ressence merges minimalist aesthetics with mechanical innovation.
Aesthetics
The new Ressence Type 8 DE1 and DE2 are interpretations of the brand’s most minimalist model. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, the 42.9mm domed case features a sleek 11mm profile, complemented by a brushed and polished "UFO-like" finish.
What sets these editions apart is the colorful dial artwork from German artist Daniel Engelberg, whose concentric acrylic compositions from the Inside Out series are faithfully reproduced here. It looks like an eye to me.
The DE1 features layered pink minute tracks, while the DE2 explores a cooler palette of turquoise rings, both radiating from a black central "void" that evokes Engelberg’s signature aesthetic. A domed dial enhances the visual depth, while the hidden-lug construction ensures a seamless flow into the matching colored rubber strap, secured with a titanium buckle.
Movement
To be honest, there is nothing new/spectacular at the heart of the Type 8 DE1 and DE2. Just a re-engineered ETA 2892 base, which drives the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS). This patented system transforms traditional time-telling into a dynamic orbital experience, rotating various discs instead of conventional hands. The entire system is adjusted via the rotating case back, eliminating the need for the usual crown.
Availability & Pricing
Each of the editions — DE1 (pink) and DE2 (turquoise) — is limited to just 40 pieces. The retail price is CHF 19,000 before taxes, which equates to approximately €19,500.
