Ralph Lauren Expands Its Iconic Safari Watch Collection with New 42mm Adventure-Ready Models

American designer Ralph Lauren has established a colossal lifestyle emporium that spans from tableware to tailored suits, always embodying a vision of laid-back sophistication. The brand's journey into fashion history began with the iconic Polo shirt in 1971, which became synonymous with the polo sport's elite status. In 1984, the Safari apparel collection was introduced, reflecting Ralph Lauren's vision of the "romance of safari" as an adventure set against a backdrop of refinement and rugged landscapes. This extended into the world of horology in 2008 when Ralph Lauren ventured into watchmaking, incorporating Swiss movements into designs that echo the brand's thematic collections such as Stirrup, Polo, Automotive, the 867 Collection, and Vintage 67, showcasing Ralph Lauren's diverse inspirations from equestrian life to his passion for vintage cars and Art Deco design.

Aesthetics

The latest addition to Ralph Lauren's watch collection introduces three new models in the Safari lineup, featuring rugged-looking 42mm cases made from blackened steel that has been shot-blasted for a vintage gunmetal appearance. These models maintain the adventurous spirit with their 100m water-resistance ensured by a screwed crown and bezel, and caseback secured with six screws. The design extends the robust, tool-like aesthetic with a screw motif on the lugs. Dial options include khaki, black, and camo, all finished with a snailing technique for a matte, non-reflective surface. The dials are adorned with oversized, luminescent Arabic numerals for clear visibility, complemented by sword-shaped hour and minute hands and a distinctive bright orange varnished seconds hand, making for a watch that's as functional as it is visually appealing.

Movement

The heart of the new 42mm models is the RL300-1 caliber, an automatic movement based on the Sellita SW300-1. It operates at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. The movement is also COSC-certified, ensuring its precision as a chronometer.

Availability & Pricing

The new Safari watches offer a choice between different straps and bracelet. These include a dark brown aged Bund calfskin strap, an olive green weathered canvas strap, and a black aged steel 3-link bracelet. The pricing is set at €3,600 for models with the leather or canvas straps, and €4,050 for the model presented on a stainless steel bracelet. This tiered pricing strategy makes the new Safari models accessible to a broad audience, reflecting the brands's inclusive approach to luxury. Potential buyers can find more information and purchase these watches through Ralph Lauren's official website.
