Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind: A Counterclockwise Classic

The relationship between Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont and Louis Cartier sparked the creation of the first purpose-designed wristwatch in 1904. This wristwatch was crafted specifically for Santos-Dumont, enabling him to check the time while flying without removing his hands from the controls. This pioneering spirit is sustained with the introduction of the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind, a watch that challenges convention with its counterclockwise movement, blending tradition and revolutionary design.

Aesthetics

The Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind remains true to the classic aesthetics of the Santos-Dumont line but introduces a twist with its unique carnelian dial featuring Roman numerals in reversed order, save for the XII and VI which maintain their standard positions. This model is housed in a 31.5mm platinum case, elegantly finished with both brushed and polished surfaces, and features the iconic square bezel with rounded edges, secured by eight screws. The crown is adorned with a ruby cabochon, echoing the red hues of the dial.

Movement

The Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind is powered by the 230 MC calibre, a variation of the Cartier 430 MC, itself based on Piaget's ultra-thin 430P calibre. This manual-winding movement has been modified to allow the hands to rotate counterclockwise, offering a playful yet sophisticated nod to the concept of turning back time. With an increidble height of just 2.15mm, the slim movement offers a power reserve of 38 hours.

Availability & Pricing

This limited edition is presented in a special lacquered wooden box. Priced at €37,000 the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind is more of a collector's item, with only 200 numbered pieces available.
