Longines Spirit Flyback Chronograph In Titanium
Earlier 2023, Longines launched the Spirit Flyback Collection. Following its success, they are now presenting this very same model encased in grade 5 titanium .This move is in line with the brand's previous offering of the time-only Spirit in titanium. In our opinion, as prices from Omega and Tudor have moved up, Longines seems decided to dominate the niche where they already are a leading force, and this new release is proof.
Aesthetics
The Spirit Flyback in titanium retains the specifications of its steel counterpart, with dimensions of 42mm x 17mm thickness (49mm lug-to-lug). The thick profile is in part due to the domed sapphire. It sports a sunray anthracite dial, adorned with a black ceramic bezel insert. When turned around, the movement is viewable via the display back.
The numerals and hands are highlighted with Super-LumiNova and gilt accents. The case, crafted from grade 5 titanium (a blend of 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium), ensures 100 meters of water resistance. The choice of grade 5 over the commonly used grade 2 signifies a commitment to quality, as seen in high-end watches like the latest released Rolex Yacht-Master 42mm. Longines is also giving customers the choice of a titanium bracelet or a NATO-style strap.
Movement
Longines is credited with inventing the flyback chronograph back in the 1930s, a watchmaking tool that was very useful for pilots. The Spirit Flyback Titanium uses the Longines-exclusive L791.4 automatic caliber. This is a modified ETA 7753 with a column wheel, flyback module, and chronometer certification, running at 28,800vph. It has a power reserve of 68 hours.
