Elton John's watch collection auction: His signature Cartier Crash and Leopard Daytona Spearhead
The upcoming auction of Elton John's "Goodbye Peachtree Road" collection, featuring 31 watches, truly reflects his unique style. These watches, including a Rolex Daytona, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and various Cartier models, blend traditional craftsmanship with Sir Elton's signature flair and a touch of sparkle.
Starting February 21st, Christie's will host eight auction events, selling items from Sir Elton John's Atlanta residence. The "Goodbye Peachtree Road" collection offers an eclectic array of photographs, art, fashion, costumes, and, notably, his watch collection.
Among the 921 lots, Sir Elton John's 31 watches stand out, showcasing his penchant for theatricality and diverse styles. Beyond their vibrant appearance, these watches reveal a deep respect for classic design.
David Furnish, John's husband and a Canadian-British filmmaker, shared with Christie's, "Elton immerses himself deeply into his interests. He's like a sponge for information."
Highlighted Watches from the Goodbye Peachtree Road Collection:
Rolex 'Leopard' Daytona
Debuted in 2004, the "Leopard" Daytona (ref. 116598SACO) seems tailor-made for Sir Elton. Combining gold with 36 orange sapphires, 48 diamonds, and leopard print elements, it remains a classic Daytona at heart. John's piece, dating back to 2001, is expected to exceed its $40,000–60,000 estimate.
Cartier Paris Crash (1991)
Sir Elton's Cartier Crash is a testament to his forward-thinking style. This bold and surreal piece, from the 1991 limited edition of 400, mirrors his unique and own expressive nature. With an auction estimate of $70,000–$100,000, it's likely to surpass bidders and collectors expectations, considering the market value of standard Paris Crashes that we all have seen recently.
Diamond-Set Cartier Tank Normale
A unique highlight is a custom Cartier Tank Normale from 2000, adorned with diamonds and sapphires. Predating the recent popularity of this model, it showcases Sir Elton's trendsetting taste. The auction estimate is set between $20,000 and $30,000.
Malaika's Favorite: Gold Chopard Imperiale Chronograph
Malaika, equally thrilled by the catalog, highlights this Chopard watch for its gem setting and distinctive design, noting it as a perfect blend of jewelry and functionality.
Other Notable Pieces: A Diverse Selection from Cartier, Franck Muller, and Lange
Sir Elton's collection also includes Franck Muller, Cartier, Vacheron, Audemars Piguet, and even Langes. Notably, he once gifted Franck Muller watches to guests at a birthday party, demonstrating his appreciation for innovative designs.
The auction features two Franck Muller watches, both emblematic of the 1990s. Additionally, a Vacheron Jalousie Les Historiques, a unique ruby-set Cartier Tank, and an early Lange Saxonia Big Date with a diamond-set bezel are part of the collection. These classic watches with a twist of color and gems represent the eclectic taste of Sir Elton.
